Online Mediation – What a Difference 60 Minutes Can Make

ADR Group UK

Monday, October 28, 2015 I presented online a 1-hour “Introduction to Online Mediation”, to a group of experienced face-to-face mediators who participated in a training offered by ADR Group, a premier dispute resolution provider based in London, UK. After my presentation and demonstration, I asked those mediators this question:

Given what you knew a hour ago, what do you think about online mediation now?

Here are some of their answers:

  • I think it has endless possibilities. It opens up new markets.
  • I think it is great. I should have been using it a long time ago. It is very useful particularly because we do a lot of business with parties in other countries. This way, they don’t need to fly to come here to mediate.
  • I was initially skeptical, but now I can see that has many advantages. And it feels safe, secure for the parties.
  • I am really convinced about the aspect of saving time and money. I live in London, and just getting around London is a nightmare. This (online mediation) is just so sensible.

Now that those mediators know what online mediation means and how it works, they will participate in a series of online, hands-on simulations, playing both the mediator’s and one of the parties’ role. And they will share their experience during an online 1-hour session Friday, October 2, 2015.

How to Have Private Meetings in Online Mediation via Zoom

Today a mediator/attorney from Pennsylvania, who recently participated (and liked very much) our “1-hour Introduction to Online Mediation” webinar, asked me to explain how online mediators can have private meetings with either party, when they mediate online via Zoom (Pro version)  – the video collaboration software we use for all our online mediation simulations and training.

This 1-min video shows how easy it is to put parties “on hold” (in an online waiting room, so to speak), and how simple it is to bring them back into our online mediation room.

Can You Teach People to Have Empathy? Interesting BBC Article

On June 29, 2015 the BBC News Magazine published an interesting article on empathy, a topic dear to many mediators’ heart. It reads:

~~~
Empathy is a quality that is integral to most people’s lives – and yet the modern world makes it easy to lose sight of the feelings of others. But almost everyone can learn to develop this crucial personality trait, says Roman Krznaric.
ADR Group 5-day Training in Online Mediation for Greek Mediators
From Monday, June 8 to Friday June 12, 2015 a group of Greek mediators will participate in a 5-day hands-on training in online mediation, offered by the London-based ADR Group, a leading authority in mediation and other dispute resolution techniques.
To begin with, those mediators will attend a webinar titled “Introduction to Online Mediation” and presented by Giuseppe Leone, founder of Virtual Mediation Lab.
Next, they will participate in a series of online mediation simulations (in Greek). Each mediator will have the opportunity to play not only the mediator’s role, but also the role of one of the parties. That way, they can experience first-hand how the parties feel and behave when they participate in an online mediation.
And finally, on Friday, June 12, all mediators will participate in a wrap-up session, to discuss their experience and lessons learned.
This training in Greek is coordinated by Zoi Giannopoulou. The same ADR Group 5-day training in online mediation is also available in English and French. For more information click here
Online Mediation Training – From Skepticism to Excitement – Another Example
On January 8, 2015 we ran an online mediation simulation for the York University in Toronto, Canada with:
  • 1 Mediator
  • 2 Parties
  • 1 Coach
  • 9 Observers (most of them represented a prominent ADR organization in Canada)
The goal of our simulation was to demonstrate to the observers how a video collaboration software like Zoom (Pro version) can help students not only to learn, but also to practice their mediation skills online.
It worked well. At the end our simulation, an experienced mediator, who during our simulation had played to role of one of the parties, wrote me this message:
~~~
Thank you Giuseppe… a fascinating experience, and well done. I can admit that I was a skeptic before doing this, and now I am quite excited about the possibilities.
~~~
The entire simulation was video recorded.
