During our debrief sessions, a typical question for the mediator who played that role during the simulation is:
You did/said X… How come? What were you trying to accomplish?
Often the mediator’s answer is:
Simply because that’s what I was told to do/say during my basic mediation training.
One key benefit for mediators who participate in our online mediation simulations is therefore discovering something new, unexpected. Whatever method they were taught during their training wasn’t “the” or “the right” method – it was just “one” method.
Interestingly enough, most mediators find that discovery energizing, liberating. Realizing that in mediation there isn’t one-size-fits-all method makes them think – Hey, perhaps I can create my own method then…
